2 CPD Points: Understanding The Marburg Virus

Marburg virus is a virus that causes Marburg virus disease (MVD), a severe and often fatal hemorrhagic fever. It’s a member of the Filovirus family, which also includes Ebola.
How it spreads
- Marburg virus is spread through contact with infected animals, blood, body fluids, or contaminated objects
- It’s usually transmitted through contact with infected bats or nonhuman primates, like monkeys
- It can spread to other humans, usually close family members or healthcare providers
Symptoms
- Symptoms include confusion, irritability, aggression, and severe blood loss
- Death usually occurs between 8 and 9 days after symptom onset
Treatment
- Early supportive care with rehydration and symptomatic treatment can improve survival
- There are no approved vaccines or antiviral treatments for MVD, but vaccines and drug therapies are under development
History
- MVD was first recognized in 1967 during outbreaks in Germany and Yugoslavia
- All recorded MVD outbreaks have originated in Africa
