Primary health care workers (PHCWs) play a key role in cervical cancer elimination by screening and treating patients, and by educating communities about cervical cancer

Screening

  • NursesNurses are often considered the most qualified PHCWs to perform cervical cancer screening. They can perform Pap smear tests. 
  • Community health workers (CHWs)CHWs can be trained to perform cervical cancer screening and treatment. They can also help build trust in screening programs within their communities. 
  • Visual inspectionPHCWs can be trained to perform visual inspection screening using acetic acid or Lugol’s iodine. This is a low-cost and effective method. 

Education 

  • Educate communities: PHCWs can educate communities about cervical cancer and the importance of screening.

Collaboration 

  • Collaborate with other health workers: PHCWs can collaborate with other health workers to provide comprehensive care for patients.

Training 

  • Train PHCWs: PHCWs can be trained to perform cervical cancer screening and treatment. Training can include the content, duration, and outcomes of training.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has set targets to eliminate cervical cancer by 2030. These targets include vaccinating 90% of girls, screening 70% of women, and treating 90% of women with cervical disease.
