Surgical Site Infection Prevention

Surgical site infections (SSIs) can be prevented by following a combination of surgical preparation, wound care, and medication.
Surgical preparation
- Avoid shaving the surgical site, unless necessary
- Use an antiseptic agent like chlorhexidine gluconate or alcohol-based skin preparation
- Perform a surgical hand scrub with antimicrobial soap for five minutes
Wound care
- Keep the wound clean and dry
- Apply a bandage to the wound
- Follow your doctor’s instructions about wound care
Medication
- Take your medicines and follow any medication instructions you’re given
- Take antibiotics as prescribed
Other prevention strategies
- Stop smoking before surgery
- Tell your surgical team about your medical history
- Maintain a healthy diet
- Maintain normothermia intraoperatively
- Control perioperative glucose values
- Use incisional negative pressure wound dressings
Signs of a surgical site infection: fever, pus, redness, heat, and pain or tenderness near the wound.
If you develop any of these symptoms, call your doctor.
