Pneumonia in Children
Pneumonia is a serious infection that inflames the air sacs in the lungs, making it difficult for children to breathe. It’s a leading cause of illness and hospitalization in children worldwide.
Causes
- Viral pneumonia: Caused by viruses like respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and influenza.
- Bacterial pneumonia: Caused by bacteria like Streptococcus pneumoniae.
Symptoms
- Cough: Dry, hacking cough or productive cough with mucus.
- Fever: High temperature, often above 102°F (39°C).
- Difficulty breathing: Rapid breathing, wheezing, or grunting.
- Chest pain: Pain or discomfort in the chest or abdomen.
Treatment
- Antibiotics: For bacterial pneumonia.
- Antiviral medication: For viral pneumonia caused by influenza.
- Supportive care: Rest, hydration, and oxygen therapy.
Prevention
- Vaccination: Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) and influenza vaccine.
- Good hygiene: Frequent handwashing and avoiding close contact with sick individuals.
When to Seek Medical Attention
- Severe symptoms: Difficulty breathing, chest pain, or high fever.
- Worsening condition: Increasing symptoms or failure to improve with treatment.
Early recognition and treatment can help prevent complications and promote recovery.
