Chronic suppurative lung Disease (CSLD) In Children
Chronic suppurative lung disease (CSLD) is a clinical syndrome in children that involves a long-standing cough that produces wet or moist phlegm:
- Symptoms: A chronic cough that produces wet or moist phlegm, along with other symptoms like chest infections, growth failure, and dyspnea when exercising
- Physical signs: Clubbing, chest wall deformity, hyperinflation, and adventitious sounds
- Common conditions: The most common forms of CSLD in children are bronchiectasis, empyema, and lung abscess
- Protracted bacterial bronchitis: A more common condition than bronchiectasis, though less persistent
CSLD can be caused by a number of factors, including: Airway insults, Conditions that make it hard for mucus to clear normally, Variations in how the body’s inflammatory response works, External compression of the airways, and Congenital lung airway malformations.
Some ways to manage CSLD include:
- Encouraging exercise and physiotherapy
- Optimizing nutrition
- Avoiding environmental pollutants, like tobacco smoke
- Keeping immunizations up to date
- Taking corticosteroids, bronchodilators, and mucoactive agents, as needed
